Federal Hill
Federal Hill is a historic area of Providence, Rhode Island. It lies just to the west of downtown Providence and is centered on Atwells Avenue. The arch that leads the visitor into Atwells Avenue is a well-known Providence landmark.
History of Federal Hill
In the 18th century colonists settling in the area were drawn by the roads that served the area. With good communications, they were able to make a success of the small farms they established and the other businesses they brought to the district.
The rural nature of the area was gradually lost as housing and commercial development replaced the farmsteads and open spaces. By the middle of the nineteenth century, a large range of skilled tradespeople and craftspeople occupied the housing and workshops that had sprung up. Much of the development was due to the energy of Amos Maine Atwells and his business partners and consequently, the main thoroughfare was named after him.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, Federal Hill was attracting large numbers of immigrants. They were drawn by cheap housing and abundant work. At first, the bulk of immigrants were Italians who so dominated the Federal Hill area that it was soon called Rhode Island’s “Little Italy”. Their influence on the area meant that Federal Hill soon resembled a small Italian town. Most of the shops and businesses housed their owners on upper floors, and street traders and vendors created a lively atmosphere.
There is little sign of this Italian domination today, but many of the buildings remain. Some have been restored, others re-purposed whilst others have been replaced. The area still feels close-knit, and although much more diverse today, the Italian influence can still be felt.
